Due to its distinctive style, this form of art is known by various names such as Geometric Kufic, Rectangular Kufic, Banna’i script and Checkered Kufic. Square Kufic is a common name among designers and artists, however, this is not quite accurate as Square Kufic is just one style of Geometric Kufic known for having the artwork inscribed within a square frame. Other similar names include Triangular Kufic, Pentagon Kufic, hexagonal Kufic. etc. which all are style of the general term Geometric Kufic. Many researchers, including myself, fell for this inaccuracy in the beginning, but with little research, it becomes obvious that this form of art is wider than Square Kufic and it is fair to call it Geometric Kufic. It’s also worth noting that Geometric Kufic is considered the last of the six Kufi variations: Simple Kufic, Foliated Kufic, Continuous Undulating Scrolls Kufic, Interlaced or Plaited Kufic, Bordered Kufic, and Geometric Kufic.
